When We Abide

The Word of God is filled with promises for His people. As His people, there are spiritual exchanges that are mentioned from Genesis to Revelations regarding the actions we should take in order to move through life when we abide in Him. The promises of God in the Bible tell us what to expect when we complete certain actions according to Scripture. Let’s explore a guarantee we find in John chapter fifteen about how to be fruitful for the glory of God.

“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away, and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. John 15:1–4 NKJV

As we look at the above scripture let’s meditate on it a bit more. In verse four there is the word…abide. The word abide means to act or accept in accordance with…The Lord is calling His people to act in accordance with Him in order to bear fruit. In other words, if you are or are not fruitful in whatever area of your life this is a call to check how you are abiding with God. You can not do it alone. The Word spells this out in verse four- As the branch, you cannot bear fruit of itself.

Let’s continue on a bit in this text. I want you to see the guarantee from the Lord for abiding in Him.

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. John 15: 5–6 NKJV

Verse five is the guarantee for abiding. It is simply stated and plain. The spiritual exchange for abiding is not only to bear fruit. The Word states that he who abides in the Lord will bear much fruit. Again, it is reiterated that without Him you can do nothing. Basically, work done outside of the Lord is just laboring in vain. Not abiding comes at a cost as well, to be…
