My husband has had to step up and take on nursing me. He has provided me with many unintentional moments of good humour. He has got better at the job and has been amazing. I really love him but he has been so funny.
Firstly, his first foray into night time nursing needed some fine tuning. I woke him up to say I needed help to take my medication. He slowly stumbled out of sleep, put his feet to the floor, fumbled for the light and then made his way slowly to my side. He was the first grumpy nurse I had encountered.
“What’s wrong?’ he asked.
“I need to take my meds,” I replied. He put the medication into my hand, but I didn’t take it straight away.
“What’s wrong now?”
“I need to know the time,” I replied.
“Night time,” he said grumpily.
“I need to know the actual time when I am taking my meds,” I said.
“Who cares, just take the pills,” he responded. However, he trudged off and came back with a time.
Some more work was needed to improve his bedside manner and approach to dishing out medication.
Honestly real nurses deserve so much credit for the job they do. They showed me so much compassion and kindness while I was in hospital. Nursing is a calling for very special people.
