Tempestade

Existe algo de desconcertante no céu que antecede uma tempestade, no vento frio que parece levar a cada momento um pouco da máscara colocada para a vida diária, na desconexão com si mesmo quando o…

Why I Support the Lincoln Project

As told by a liberal feminist

When my liberal father, a retired history professor, read about The Lincoln Project, he pronounced, “I think I’m going to give them money.” To clarify, for my father that means like $100. Yet, this small contribution made him feel as though he had donated to the cause, given something to support an organization that has potential, and contributed to this cause we call democracy. I then started following the organization and its founders on Twitter just to see what they were up to this past spring. I quickly became consumed and started to have just a little more hope in our American experiment. Each time I shared one of the Project’s new ads with my father he would say, “You know, I gave them money.” And oh, what they have done with that $100!

What is The Lincoln Project? This organization is a group of Never-Trumpers from the (former) Republican party working to ensure Donald Trump loses the Presidency. The group includes Republican strategists, former candidates, attorneys, and former leaders of the RNC. Some have questioned the motives of the group, wondering if a specific political agenda exists or if the group will begin an attack on liberal philosophies. The Project’s response is-we have one goal. To remove Trump from office. As I observe their work, I believe them.

I have two confessions. One, I am a political news hobbyist. I consume far more information and news than is probably healthy, and I immerse myself in the country’s political content more than the average voter “outside of the Beltway”. I literally have a secret Twitter account so that I can follow and comment without commingling my political hobby with my professional realm. Two, I am a liberal feminist. I am in favor of ERA, gun legislation, universal basic income, and the Green New Deal. I am highly unlikely to support any GOP strategist organization. Why, on earth, would a liberal feminist engage with and support such a group as The Lincoln Project? While I disagree with many fundamental Republican principles, I understand the importance differing views play in a healthy democracy. And simply put, I recognize the Project’s capability to influence Independent and Republican voters. “Country over Party” stands as the Project’s current tagline.
