Lhamo was a Tibetan farmer in Southwest China. She posted videos of herself cooking in her kitchen, picking herbs, singing in the mountain near her village. Lhamo was upbeat, positive and always looked happy in her posts on the Chines app Douyin, which is like our Tik Tok. She had over 200,00 followers.

But behind her beautiful smile. Lhamo had endeured years of domestic abuse from her husband,Tang.

Lhamo was 17 when she started dating Tang. Ten years later, they married and had two sons. Lhamo divorced Tang for alleged domestic abuse and then remarried him and divorced him again. Things got much worse when Lhamo’s mother died. She was the only one who would defend her daughter against Tang.

And when that didn’t work he would threaten to kill her and their two sons if she didn’t return to him. Lhamo felt she had no choice but to go back.

Desperate for help she would go to the Police but they did nothing to protect her from Tang’s abuse.

On September 14, 2020, Lhamo was live streaming from her kitchen when the viewers saw a man storm into her house. He covered her in gasoline and lit her on fire. Then the screen went black. Her father, who was in the other room, rushed her to the Hospital. She was in intensive care with ninety percent of her body burned. Her sister said Lhamo couldn’t breathe. “And that he had burned all her skin off.” Three weeks later, she died. She was thirty years old.
