Writing for your local newspaper, or local news website is a good way to get “published,” and to get some real-world experience in writing. It is a good place to start and you can make some cash along the way.
I've been in the newspaper business for 30 years. I have been an editor for small papers, and always had 3–4 people I could call to get a story written. I think it's a great deal for all concerned. Some papers balk at the idea, but others see how it is a win for everyone.
I would always give a person a chance if they called or showed up and asked to write for me. Sometimes it worked and sometimes not, but the thing I learned was you should never judge a book by its cover. I also enjoyed coaching people that maybe were not very good but were willing and wanting to learn.

Newspaper writing is different than any other kind of writing. Reporting is gathering facts and putting them together in hopefully an understandable way. You will get to meet some interesting people and maybe go to some interesting events. You may also have tight deadlines and specific word counts to follow. Even that is a good discipline to learn.
