Squirrel behavior is always fun and interesting, but the origins of common phrases are sometimes more complicated.
The phrase “peanut gallery” is said to have originally referred to the cheap seats in theaters where hecklers sat and threw cheap peanuts at performers. A couple of sources also noted a racial connection.
I am in awe of the complexity, history, and power of language. We still have a lot of work to do to make sure our shared language reflects a world where everyone feels accepted and reflected.
