Young adults today have the necessary tools and technology to reach thousands of individuals at once, as well as having access to numerous support groups based on their interests and needs and sometimes as simple as having a sense of belonging. Social media sites have a huge impact on teenagers, and it is essential to keep in mind the positive effects it can have as well as being mindful of the negative.
Teenagers don’t always think broadly about how their actions can affect them later and when speaking of privacy online they rarely consider limiting some of the information they share. Privacy risks come with the smallest information given, simple things like mentioning their school name or accidentally syncing their cellphone number to their profiles is a common yet possibly harmful mistake.
With extreme amounts of social media usage in teens comes with teenagers constantly comparing themselves and developing unrealistic views about their bodies and images all together. They grow a sense of envy while comparing themselves and their lifestyles.
Social media in some cases can become addicting, leading to less face to face encounters resulting in the lack of in-person contact. This addiction to social media can go on to affect relationships as any form of addiction does. Constantly communicating online or through text can have downfalls, Some teens spend so much time online it becomes hard for them to communicate with people face to face, they spend so much time concentrating on likes and post that their actual relationships with friends, family, or significant others suffer.
