Santa Muerte in Mexico City

On my Mexico journey, I visited the most dangerous neighborhood in Mexico City and experienced the festivity honoring the Lady of the Death, Santa Muerte — is celebrated every first of the month in the heart of Tepito, Mexico City.

The devotees are confident she is a sacred being who protects their life. They decorated her in vibrant dresses, a pretty robe, shimmering velvet, and sequins, and carrying a scythe.

The cheer of La Santa Muerte “Chiquitibum a la bim bom ba, Chiquitibum a la bim bom ba, a la bio, a la bao, a la bim bom ba, La Santa rah rah rah.. Se ve, Se Siente, La Santa está Presente — means you can see it, you can feel it, the Saint is here, heard over the Tepito on that day.

I arrived along with the pilgrims where they walked, and some crawled on their knees cradling the La Muerte in their arms head toward the public shrine. They looked pain-like in the atonement for their sins.

While heading to the altar, I was stunned by the solemn procession, where they exhaled smoke from marijuana cigarettes to La Muerte, splashed in the Mezcal*, and sprayed a kind of air freshener on her, which is believed to remove the negative energy. They also have offerings, such as sweets, flowers, fruits, candles, and rosaries.

Once I reached the sanctuary, I met a woman named Samantha. She looks around her 50s. She is not someone who had come from another place, her house just across the altar.
