Social Issues on College Campuses

I think that colleges need to talk more about sexual assault, substance abuse, alcohol and loneliness more because they are big issues with students. Colleges tell people about how well their students are doing but fail to tell people what students may go through. Sexual assault and substance abuse can be life altering issues. Being sexually assaulted happens more in college and around ages 18–24 than any other time in someones life. I don’t think students are prepared for when situations like these occur. Students should have to take classes on self defense to be able to help reduce assaults happening or at least it will give the student a chance to get away. Substance abuse is beginning to get out of hand. Drugs are so deadly nowadays that people tend to just blink an eye when another overdose occurs. Underage drinking is something that almost all teenagers do. It’s dangerous and causes many car accidents and by enforcing underage drinking laws would help prevent these such things from occurring. Not only do drugs and alcohol affect a student’s academic life but so does their mental health. A student being lonely and feeling like they don’t fit in is where counselors need to be pushing that individual to get more active in social interaction because not becoming social not only affects your college life but also your social skills throughout the rest of your life. These issues need to be talked more about on college campuses.
