Write Fright

Sharing my work is hands-down one of the most terrifying experiences I have encountered in my writing journey. It’s all well and good to be a writer in name only, to write stories and never share them, but that isn’t how you improve, unfortunately for me. If I had it my way, I would be a writing dragon, hoarding up all my stories in a comfortable cave and eating anyone who tried to read them.

Ok, that’s a little bit dramatic, but you get the picture.

I want to be a writer one day, but every time I publish a story, a rush of adrenaline somewhat akin to stage fright flutters in my stomach. Will people like it? What if they hate it? What if they tell me they hate it? What if they hunt me down and burn me at the stake because they hate it so much?

The last part hasn’t happened (yet). But I have received my fair share of criticism in the years I’ve been blogging, and not all of it has been helpful. A good portion of it has been, however. And honestly, hearing praise isn’t helpful, either!

As awful as it feels to have one of my precious pieces of work torn to shreds by an encroaching knight, it always makes me a stronger writer in the end. I don’t know if I’ll ever be comfortable publishing my work, but at the very least, I can learn from it.
